Are top heroines getting grounded? The Queen Bee’s of Kollywood like Trisha, Asin, Nayantara and Reema Sen are finding it increasingly difficult to get new assignments in Tamil.
After she completes Bheema, Trisha has only Ajit’s Kireedom in which she has a miniscule role. Asin has completed work on Pokiri and Aalwar. By January, Ravikumar will complete her scenes for Dasavatharam in which she shares screen space with two other heroines.
Nayantara has not signed a single Tamil film though she has completed an item number with Rajnikanth in Sivaji. She is concentrating in Telugu, where she is doing three films. Reema Sen too has no films in Tamil as she is doing Chal Chala Chal a Hindi film with Govinda.
There are no women centric roles in Tamil which continues to be a male dominated industry. Even in superstar films the talented girls don’t get the deserved importance in the script and literally ends up doing three or four songs and a few scenes. So the top heroine is the one who features in as many hit films with a superstar!
Let us take a look at top heroes and their films in 2007.
Vijay - Azhaghiya Tamil Magan - Heroine - Shriya
Vikram - Susi Ganesan directed untitled film - Heroine - Likely to be a Bollywood girl
Ajit - Kireedom - Heroine - Trisha
Surya - Vaaranam Aayiram - Heroine - Asin, Shriya and a Mumbai girl are in the race.
Vishal- Sathyam - Heroine - Trisha, Nayanthara and Anushka are in the race.
It clearly indicates that top heroines who prefer to do films opposite superstars will now have to turn towards young guns like Bharath, Arya, Simbu, Dhanush, Pritviraj, Jeeva etc. But the problem is that these young guns prefer younger girls like Sandhya, Bhavana, Tamanna, who charge half the salary.
The situation is very similar to the Indian aviation industry where low-cost airlines like Air Deccan and Go Air are eating into Indian Airlines and Jet market! Says a leading producer: “By having a comparatively new girl as heroine, I am saving on the production cost. As far as saleability of a film goes, it is the hero that matters most as the heroine is there for glamour.
As the situation gets desperate the seniors are pressing the panic buttons as some of them are offering discount rates to counter competition!
